Media Blasting FAQs

With precise media selection and controlled pressure, we ensure a flawless finish ready for coating. Learn more about our media blasting process here.

What is media blasting?

Media blasting is also known as sand blasting, shot blasting, grit blasting or bead blasting. Media blasting is the process of cutting away or stripping the top surface of a part using grit propelled by compressed air.

What is media blasting used for?

Media blasting is a surface cutting / stripping operation so is used where heavy rust or oxidisation must be removed. It leaves a very good key for paint and powder coat finishes, the process is also used extensively as a preparation for vapour blasting, plating or polishing.

What media is used for sand blasting?

There is a huge selection of different media that can be used (but never sand). These range from soda powder and crushed walnut shell at the softer end of the scale, to heavy grits like aluminium oxide and steel shot at the more aggressive end.

We offer, fine and course aluminium oxide, glass bead and garnet as blasting media. We find that, in combination with our vapour blasting cabinet, this offering gives us a wide range of options on finishes.

What preparation is needed for media blasting?

The surfaces to be blasted / stripped must be corrosion free, fully degreased and have all paints and finished removed. In the case of engine parts; all oil- and water-ways must be fully sealed off to ensure no media is left in the part. All bearing surfaces must be protected too, to ensure they are not damaged.

What finishes can be achieved with media blasting?

By changing media and pressure settings there a huge range of finishes that can be created. Most people imagine a dull rough, almost sandpaper, like finish when thinking of sand blasting, but we are able to achieve varying levels of roughness and shine right up to a satin finish when blasting with glass bead.

How much does media blasting cost?

We charge a flat rate of £60 per hour. The amount of time it will take to media blast your part will depend of it's size, shape, material and level of dirt. Air cooled cylinder heads with cooling fins will take a lot longer to clean than a water cooled version, for example. We are happy to supply an estimate including a blasting plan before starting any works. Please be aware that the job may take longer, but we try to be as accurate as possible.
